Student Success Tip

Help your students develop effective study techniques.

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method that utilizes focused work intervals, typically 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. These intervals are called "pomodoros" (Italian for tomato), referencing the tomato-shaped timer used by its creator. After four pomodoros, a longer break is taken.

Here's how it works:

Choose a task: Select a specific task to focus on.

Set a timer: Use a timer (physical or digital) for 25 minutes.

Work with focus: Work on the task until the timer rings, minimizing distractions.

Take a short break: After the timer goes off, take a 5-minute break.

Repeat: Repeat steps 2-4 three more times.

Longer break: Take a longer break (15-30 minutes) after completing four pomodoros.

Benefits of the Pomodoro Technique:

  • Improved focus: The structured intervals help maintain concentration and minimize distractions.
  • Reduced procrastination: Breaking down tasks into manageable chunks can make them less daunting.
  • Prevention of burnout: Short breaks help prevent mental fatigue and promote sustained focus.
  • Enhanced time management: The technique provides a framework for managing time effectively and prioritizing tasks.
